Barcelona's brilliance is making La Liga “boring”, according to Diego Simeone.

And Jose Mourinho admitted retaining the title is “almost impossible” after his Real Madrid side fell 13 points behind.

The Catalan club moved nine points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid after another two goals from Lionel Messi led them to a 4-1 win over their nearest rivals.

Now Atletico coach Simeone fears the title race is already over before Christmas after Barca dropped only two points in their first 16 matches.

“Our team is a strong team, we know how to play,” said the Argentine. “We put in an enormous effort, we showed our souls. We lost to a team who plays in a different league than ours. They are making this a boring league.”

Defending champions Real Madrid drew 2-2 with 19th-placed Espanyol. They now have 15 points this season - already more than the whole of last season.

Mourinho, who has been linked with a summer return to the Premier League, said: ”I’ve never seen a situation where there’s been so many points lost and that a team of mine was so far from its objective.

“It’s a new situation for me. 13 points in December are a lot. We had eight last year and despite drawing two matches we maintained that distance.

“The league is almost impossible, but we need to continue, Real Madrid demand the maximum dignity.

“In my coaching career I’ve always, or almost always, achieved my objectives and this is new for me.”
