Nemanja Vidic showed he is ready to make his Manchester United comeback tomorrow against Cluj by taking part in this morning's training session at Carrington.

The Serbian has been absent since undergoing knee surgery in September and has played only 15 matches since the start of last season.

Vidic, 31, is expected to return tomorrow as captain, which could put him in contention to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The only surprise absentee this morning was Jonny Evans and no reason was given for the Northern Irishman's failure to train.

Evans had earlier warned United need to tighten up their defence.

"We sort of had this predicament last year leading up to Christmas, where we scoring a lot of goals but also conceding a lot of goals," he said.

"It was something that we had to have a look at, because we are playing so open and sometimes quite high up the pitch.

"We've pushed our full backs on and that's something you have to get the right balance between.

"I'm sure that is something we will eradicate from the game, but we don't want to concede goals and give teams a chance to beat us or even take points of us."

"Whenever we do go a goal behind or two goals we never ever feel like we are out of the game.

"Being at this club you always know you're going to score goals the way the manager sets us up and the way the coaches want us to play attacking football and create chances."

Midfielder Anderson, who injured his hamstring in the 4-3 win at Reading on Saturday, was missing, as was Antonio Valencia, who has a hip problem.

While tomorrow night's game is a dead rubber for the Red Devils, whose status as Group H winners is already assured, it could be of huge significance to Cluj.

The Romanian champions need to better Galatasaray's result against Braga to reach the last 16.
